Luca Avanzi - oboe

Luca Avanzi began his musical training under the guidance of the distinguished G. Calderoni, P. Molino, R. Laganà, and G. Garbarino, later refining his studies with Maurice Bourgue and Paolo Grazzi. Since 1978 he has won numerous scholarships and competitions.
His solo training led him to hold the position of Principal Oboe in prestigious orchestras such as the Teatro alla Scala, the European Community Youth Orchestra, the RAI National Symphony Orchestra, the Pomeriggi Musicali in Milan, among others, performing under conductors including Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Lorin Maazel, Carlo Maria Giulini, Seiji Ozawa, Georges Prêtre, Daniel Barenboim, Rafael Kubelik, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Daniele Gatti, Antal Dorati, and many others.

He has performed a large portion of the solo repertoire with orchestra (concertos by Richard Strauss, Mozart, Haydn, Marcello, Vivaldi, Bach, Barber, Donatoni…). He has also deepened his knowledge of historical performance practice by playing period instruments with Roberto Gini, Gaetano Nasillo, Fabio Biondi, Paolo Beschi, and other specialists in the field.

He has recorded numerous CDs, beginning with his first in 1995 for Stradivarius, entitled Concerti per oboe del ’700 italiano. In 2007, the same label released Maderna’s First Concerto for Oboe and Chamber Ensemble, and in 2012 he recorded Gardella’s Livre d’arabesques for oboe and ensemble.

He has long collaborated with major Italian and international chamber music institutions such as Nieuw Ensemble Amsterdam, Divertimento Ensemble, Novecento e oltre, Nuove Sincronie, Musica Rara, Musica Insieme of Cremona, and Novurgia. Numerous composers have dedicated premieres to him, including Niccolò Castiglioni (Rima), Pippo Molino, Sandro Gorli, Davide Anzaghi, Daniel D’Adamo, Federico Gardella, and others. Among his recent projects, he replaced Heinz Holliger in Milan in Maderna’s First Concerto and gave the Italian premiere of Elliott Carter’s Oboe sommerso.

In 1998 he took part in the recording of the CD Vivaldi: the meeting together with P. Arruga, Ottavio Dantone, and Cuban percussionist Dave Lombardo, alternating Vivaldian melodies with jazz-inspired improvisations. Starting in 1990, he published reviews for many years in the prestigious magazine MUSICA.

For over 15 years he has been Principal Oboe of the Divertimento Ensemble, one of Italy’s leading groups on the contemporary music scene. Since 2000 he has been Professor of Oboe at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan.
